Councillors Approve Urgent €10.2M Budget for Connemara Roads

UPDATE: Local councillors have just approved a critical budget of €10.2 million for the Connemara region in 2026, addressing urgent infrastructure needs. This budget is vital for the ongoing management of essential services, including roadworks, public parks, and social housing maintenance.
The decision, made by councillors earlier today, allocates nearly two-thirds of the budget specifically for road repairs and improvements. However, officials acknowledge that this funding is merely a small fraction of the total amount needed to address the region’s deteriorating road conditions.
Fine Gael Councillor Eileen Mannion emphasized the pressing need for a dedicated climate change fund to enhance road resilience in Connemara, especially in light of the recent devastating effects of Storm Amy. Mannion stated, “The impact of climate change is real, and our roads need immediate attention to ensure safety and accessibility for our residents.”
The €10.2 million budget will also cover significant areas such as litter management, recycling facilities, and street parking, all crucial for maintaining the quality of life in the Connemara community.
As the region continues to grapple with the effects of extreme weather and infrastructural challenges, this budget approval marks a pivotal step in securing the necessary resources for sustainable development.
Residents and stakeholders are urged to stay engaged as further details emerge about the implementation of these funds. The council is expected to provide updates on specific projects and timelines in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for further developments on how this budget will transform the Connemara region and its vital infrastructure.
