Councillors Urge Urgent Speed Limit Review Near Kilkenny GAA Grounds

URGENT UPDATE: Councillors in North Kilkenny are taking immediate action to address escalating safety concerns near the Kilkenny GAA grounds. A crucial meeting is set to take place with An Garda Síochana and local authorities to discuss a review of the speed limit on the N78 road at Ballyhemmin, Castlecomer.
The meeting comes in response to alarming reports of vehicles speeding past residential cottages and GAA facilities, raising fears for pedestrian safety. “People just come over the hill at the cottages and just fly down the road,” stated Cllr Pat Fitzpatrick. He emphasized the urgent need for action following a tragic incident in the area several years ago, which has left the community on high alert.
Cllr Fitzpatrick, alongside fellow councillors Cllr Maurice Shortall and Cllr John Brennan, is advocating for a comprehensive reduction of speed limits in this critical section. They aim to collaborate with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and An Garda Síochana to ensure swift implementation of necessary changes.
Residents have expressed growing anxiety about the dangers posed by current traffic conditions. The councillors’ meeting is expected to take place shortly, with further announcements anticipated regarding potential adjustments to the speed limits.
The outcome of this meeting could have significant implications for local safety, making it imperative for community members to stay informed. Further developments are expected as officials push for timely action to ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers alike in this busy area.
Stay tuned for updates on this pressing issue as the meeting unfolds.
