UPDATE: Legal proceedings against the Irish State concerning defective concrete blocks are entering a critical next stage, according to Defective Blocks Ireland. This multiparty legal action, spearheaded by Coleman Legal, represents over 2,000 affected homeowners in Donegal whose lives and homes have been severely impacted.

In a statement released today, Defective Blocks Ireland confirmed that the discovery phase has officially concluded for the six lead cases in this litigation, with all parties gearing up for the next steps. The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) has raised questions regarding certain testing methodologies related to samples from Gransha Quarry, prompting Coleman Legal to engage directly with the NSAI to resolve these outstanding issues.

As of now, a Notice of Motion filed by the NSAI in May 2025 is set to return to court on December 8, 2025. If unresolved technical matters persist, the plaintiffs may need to seek a hearing date for further legal action. The NSAI’s involvement underscores the urgency of ensuring accurate testing and accountability for the affected families.

Testing is currently ongoing for samples from the homes of the lead plaintiffs. Coleman Legal has received complete results for one of the six homes, while results for the second are expected later this month. These findings are crucial for substantiating the plaintiffs’ claims and advancing the litigation process.

Defective Blocks Ireland emphasizes the importance of this legal battle for the families involved, stating, “Behind every set of test results and every court date are families living with fear, loss, and uncertainty. Homeowners have waited far too long for answers and accountability.”

In addition to the primary case, Coleman Legal has initiated further proceedings against the State, including the Minister for Housing. Discovery in these additional cases was completed in July 2025, with the State required to provide its own discovery by February 23, 2026.

This ongoing legal saga is a vital path toward justice for those impacted by defective concrete blocks, as families across Donegal continue to seek redress for the damage to their homes and lives. The community’s resilience is evident as Defective Blocks Ireland remains committed to supporting affected homeowners through this challenging journey.

As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the court’s decisions next month, which may further shape the future of countless families still reeling from the effects of defective construction materials.
