Deadly Tour Bus Crash Near Niagara Falls Leaves Many Trapped
URGENT UPDATE: A devastating tour bus crash on August 22, 2023, left multiple people dead and many trapped on the I-90 highway near Pembroke, approximately 40 km east of Buffalo. The bus, carrying over 50 passengers returning to New York City from Niagara Falls, lost control and rolled over, with reports of serious injuries and fatalities.
Authorities confirm that the bus was traveling eastbound when it veered into the median, overcorrected, and crashed into a ditch. “At this time we have multiple fatalities, multiple entrapments and multiple injuries,” stated Trooper James O’Callahan of the New York State Police. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, with passengers ejected from the bus as windows shattered upon impact.
Emergency responders, including several ambulances and medical helicopters from Mercy Flight, have been dispatched to the crash site. By 2:10 p.m., the Erie County Medical Center reported receiving at least eight patients. More helicopters and ambulances are being sent to assist, as the situation remains critical. Mercy Flight president Margaret Ferrentino emphasized, “It’s a very active scene. At this time we’re praying for the victims.”
Most passengers on board were reported to be of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino descent, prompting officials to bring in translators to support families at the scene. The bus driver survived the crash and is cooperating with authorities.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences on social media, acknowledging the “tragic tour bus accident” and confirming her office’s collaboration with local law enforcement and emergency services.
The New York State Thruway Authority has closed a significant stretch of the roadway in both directions, urging drivers to avoid the area as debris covers the road. Witness Powell Stephens recounted the chaos: “There was glass all over the road and people’s stuff all over the road. Windows were all shattered.”
This incident marks a shocking reminder of the risks associated with travel, especially during busy tourist seasons. As investigations continue, authorities are working diligently to assess the full scope of the tragedy and provide support to the affected families.
