Derek Warfield and Young Wolfe Tones Set for Historic Shows

URGENT UPDATE: Derek Warfield and his band, The Young Wolfe Tones, are gearing up for two highly anticipated performances at The Claddagh Ring in London and the Páirc Summer Series in Birmingham on August 23 and 24, 2023, respectively. This marks a significant moment as Warfield, renowned for his contributions to Irish rebel music, celebrates over 60 years in the industry.
Warfield, who initially gained fame with the iconic group The Wolfe Tones, has dedicated the last 15 years to nurturing new talent through The Young Wolfe Tones. He expressed his excitement for the upcoming shows, stating, “I’ve always enjoyed singing our songs to any community that appreciates the music and ballads we perform.”
The band has been part of the Irish music scene since Warfield formed it in 2008, aiming to pass on the rich heritage of Irish music to younger generations. He emphasized the importance of this tradition, saying, “Irish music preserved every aspect of our culture through years of oppression.”
The Young Wolfe Tones band includes talented musicians like Damaris Woods, acclaimed as one of the best banjo players in Ireland, and singer Eddie Kane from County Kildare, who brings a fresh passion for Irish music to the stage. Warfield noted the intergenerational appeal of their performances, which attract audiences of all ages. “We get young people who love the excitement of our songs and older audiences who enjoy watching them dance,” he added.
As the band prepares for their performances, Warfield reflected on his rich history in music, including fond memories of playing in London’s vibrant folk scene during the 1960s. He shared, “The folk music scene was powerful across London, and we had many memorable gigs.”
Looking back at his career, Warfield recounted significant milestones, including a performance for President Obama in 2015 and a memorable appearance at the 1916 commemorations in Ireland. He expressed pride in being part of such poignant moments in Irish history.
The urgency of their upcoming shows is underscored by the growing interest in Irish music among younger audiences. Warfield noted, “Young people today realize the value of what our music has told them through song,” highlighting the connection between the music and the historical events it reflects.
With shows on the horizon, Warfield remains committed to his craft, dismissing suggestions of retirement. “The Young Wolfe Tones has given me lots of fun,” he remarked, emphasizing the joy he derives from performing for audiences around the world.
