Derry Man Charged with Assaulting Pregnant Girlfriend
URGENT UPDATE: A 32-year-old man from Derry has been charged with multiple offenses, including assaulting and strangling his pregnant girlfriend, following a disturbing incident on September 29. The accused, identified as Robert Doyle, was arrested after police responded to a call from the injured party, who is reportedly around 17 weeks pregnant.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim covered in blood, suffering from a severe head wound. She informed the police that Doyle had strangled her and struck her with what she believed to be a drawer or a rolling pin. Both items were located nearby, leading to Doyle’s immediate arrest.
During police interviews, Doyle remained silent, offering no comment. Authorities are particularly concerned about the risk of reoffending and potential witness interference, prompting them to oppose bail. They expressed fears that he may attempt to flee to avoid prosecution due to family connections across the border.
In court on Wednesday, police disclosed that Doyle has been assessed as a high-risk perpetrator of domestic abuse. Defense Barrister Sinead Rogan argued that he has established ties in the city and is unlikely to abscond, noting his engagement with probation services for previous offenses.
District Judge Ted Magill highlighted Doyle’s concerning history of domestic violence, stating that the injured party had “clearly received substantial injuries” that were “not self-inflicted.” After considering the evidence, he denied bail, remanding Doyle in custody until his next court appearance scheduled for October 29.
This alarming case underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence and its tragic impact on victims, especially vulnerable individuals like pregnant women. Authorities are urging anyone affected by domestic abuse to seek help and report incidents to ensure safer communities.
