Dublin Ladies Celebrate All-Ireland Triumph with Historic Homecoming

Thousands of fans gathered in Smithfield, Dublin, on September 5, 2023, to celebrate the Dublin ladies football team’s historic All-Ireland homecoming. This marked the first dedicated homecoming event for the champions, despite their remarkable achievement of winning seven senior All-Ireland titles since 2010. Dublin Lord Mayor Ray McAdam addressed the enthusiastic crowd, which consisted largely of young people, stating, “They have made our city and county proud once again. It’s about time and it is a fitting way to celebrate every member of this squad.” He emphasized the team’s role in inspiring the next generation of athletes. To honor the champions, the Dublin City Council illuminated the Samuel Beckett Bridge in blue, a vibrant display of support for the team.

The homecoming was initially slated for September 4, 2023, but was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. The delay proved inconsequential for the team, who celebrated their victory at the Castleknock Hotel before continuing the festivities at a local venue. Their latest triumph was a commanding victory against provincial rivals Meath, further solidifying their status in Irish women’s football.

The championship match showcased a dominant performance from the Dublin squad, particularly in the first quarter, where they established a significant lead. The team faced a near exit in the semi-final, but managed to equalize against Galway with a dramatic 40-metre free kick from Hannah Tyrrell. Tyrrell, who arrived at the homecoming with a crutch and her two-year-old daughter, Aoife, suffered a knee injury during the final moments of the match. Despite this setback, she expressed her satisfaction with the victory, stating, “It was worth it for the win. It doesn’t matter now, I’m retired.”

At 34, Tyrrell’s retirement marks the end of an impressive sporting career that included two All-Ireland titles and previous achievements with the Ireland rugby team, including a Six Nations championship in 2015 and participation in the 2017 Rugby World Cup. Her daughter’s presence at the celebration symbolized a potential future star in Dublin football.

Team captain Carla Rowe reflected on her fourth All-Ireland title, expressing her gratitude for the occasion. “There was a moment this morning when I was meeting the girls to go into town and I thought, ‘we’re All-Ireland champions’. Those little moments are really cool,” she said. Rowe highlighted the significance of the homecoming as a first for a ladies team, stating, “We are enjoying every moment while we can.
