UPDATE: A thrilling race unfolded in Dublin as local runner Daniel Toal nearly beat the Route 16 Dublin Bus from O’Connell Street to Dublin Airport. This fierce competition, covering a distance of 11.3 km, showcased an incredible showdown between man and machine that has captivated viewers.

The challenge, which occurred last month, saw Toal, a 32-year-old YouTuber behind the channel Craic & Kilometres, take on the bus in an effort to highlight the efficiency of public transport in the capital. “I was on the 16 bus to the airport, and it was just crawling the whole way,” Toal remarked. “It took about an hour, and in the crowded bus, it felt like double the time.”

Toal set stringent rules for the race: he had to follow the exact route of the bus and obey all traffic lights. In an unexpected twist, the traffic signals posed a significant challenge. “The traffic lights in the end kind of screwed me over. It was close,” he admitted.

With his friend Niall providing live updates from the bus, Toal pushed himself to the limit. He crossed the finish line at Terminal 1 with a time of 55:57, just a hair behind the bus’s official time of 54:10. This close finish has sparked discussions across social media, as viewers express their amazement at the outcome.

Following this exhilarating race, Toal immediately took on another challenge, racing the Luas tram from Connolly Station to Heuston the following week. “I actually thought the Luas one was going to be harder than the Dublin Bus one,” he shared. “But I ended up overtaking another Luas on the way. It was much, much easier than I thought.”

Toal, an avid runner for the past five years, aims to inspire others to embrace running through his engaging videos. “I say the craic comes first and the kilometres afterwards,” he explained. “I try to make the videos entertaining so people can relate to them and maybe get them into running.”

Looking ahead, Toal humorously expressed his ambition to race Dublin’s upcoming Metrolink once it is completed. “I saw the Metrolink got approved there on Thursday. In the next 30 or 40 years when I’m 60 or 70, I might try that!”

This unique race has not only entertained viewers but has also sparked a conversation about public transport efficiency in Dublin. As Toal continues to explore challenges against the city’s transport, the community eagerly anticipates what he will tackle next.
