Dundalk Triumphs 3-0 Over Finn Harps to Secure Premier Division Promotion
Dundalk FC clinched promotion to the Premier Division with a decisive 3-0 victory over Finn Harps at Oriel Park on March 15, 2024. The match, attended by over 3,000 fans, showcased Dundalk’s dominance as they capitalized on critical mistakes made by their opponents.
The first half concluded without any goals, but the tide turned in the 54th minute. A miscommunication between Finn Harps’ defenders, Joel Bradley-Walsh and Idir Zerrouk, allowed Conor O’Keeffe to seize possession. O’Keeffe then set up Gbemi Arubi, who scored from close range, putting Dundalk ahead 1-0.
Dundalk quickly doubled their lead just five minutes later. A penalty was awarded after Finn Harps’ Conor Tourish was deemed to have handled the ball in the area. Daryl Horgan stepped up to convert the penalty, bringing the score to 2-0.
Finn Harps managed to stave off further damage shortly after when their goalkeeper, Lorenzo Piaia, saved another penalty taken by Horgan. The decision came after Tourish committed a foul on Arubi, but Piaia guessed correctly to deny Horgan.
As the match progressed, Dundalk maintained control. Late in the game, during added time, Vinnie Leonard secured the third goal for Dundalk, nodding in a rebound and solidifying the victory.
This win not only marked a triumphant return for Dundalk to the Premier Division but also signaled the beginning of celebrations for the team and its supporters. For Finn Harps, the match served as another learning experience in a challenging season characterized by ups and downs.
Dundalk’s lineup featured players including Peter Cherrie, Aodh Dervin, and Shane Tracey. Meanwhile, Finn Harps included players such as Gavin Gilmore and Ibrahima Pokou Bangoura.
