EU Funding Cuts Could Threaten 16,000 Irish Fisheries Jobs

New reports confirm that members of Ireland’s seafood industry are sounding alarms over potential EU funding cuts that could devastate fisheries across Donegal and the entire nation. The proposed changes threaten the dedicated EU seafood fund, known as the EMFAF, which is slated to be replaced by a broader funding pool. This new fund, totaling €865 million, would allocate a mere 1% to the fishing sector, merging it with other economic areas, including agriculture and regional development.
The Seafood Industry Alliance (SIA) warns that if these cuts are implemented, up to two-thirds of fisheries jobs in Ireland—approximately 16,000 jobs—could be at risk. Dominic Rihan, CEO of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation, expressed the grave implications of this decision, stating, “Without a dedicated funding stream for seafood, we risk losing essential investment. This could push us to the margins when we should be front and centre in providing food security and maintaining coastal communities.”
The urgency of the situation is heightened as Minister Timmy Dooley and other officials rally support for a fair deal. Rihan emphasized, “This is a moment for strong action. Our seafood sector depends on it.”
The immediate impact of these proposed funding cuts could reshape the future of Ireland’s fishing industry, endangering not only jobs but also the livelihoods of communities that rely heavily on fishing. The industry is now calling for all Irish MEPs to back efforts to secure a dedicated funding stream amid these alarming developments.
As discussions continue, the industry faces an uncertain future, urging swift action from policymakers to avert a crisis. Stakeholders are encouraged to remain vigilant as the situation evolves, with the potential for widespread ramifications on the nation’s economy and food security.
