EU Launches Urgent Probe into Hungarian Spying Allegations

UPDATE: The European Union has officially launched an urgent investigation into allegations that Hungary operated a clandestine spying network aimed at EU decision-making processes. This shocking revelation comes following a comprehensive international media investigation published earlier today, which claims that Budapest enlisted its own citizens working within EU institutions in Brussels to conduct espionage activities.
According to the report, Hungarian intelligence officials pressured these employees to leak sensitive internal documents and modify critical drafts to align with the worldview of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. This scheme reportedly spanned from 2012 to 2018 and was said to primarily benefit Orban’s administration, which has faced ongoing tensions with EU leaders over issues of democracy and governance.
The investigative efforts were led by the Hungarian media outlet Direkt36 in collaboration with various international newspapers, including Belgium’s De Tijd, Germany’s Der Spiegel, and Austrian daily Der Standard. The investigation highlights a systematic approach by Hungary’s foreign intelligence service to cultivate a network of spies within EU ranks, a move described as being designed to “benefit a power clique,” according to unnamed Hungarian EU officials.
In response to these serious allegations, Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs took to social media to dismiss the claims, calling them a “smear campaign” orchestrated by foreign intelligence agencies. Kovacs tweeted, “The allegation published today by @direkt36 is nothing more than a smear campaign against Hungary.” His comments have drawn significant attention, particularly in the context of Hungary’s fraught relationship with the EU.
The European Commission has expressed that it takes such allegations “very seriously.” Spokesman Balazs Ujvari announced that an internal group will be established to investigate the claims further, emphasizing the EU’s commitment to safeguarding its staff and information from illicit espionage efforts. Ujvari stated, “We will be setting up an internal group to look into these,” highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The investigation reveals that Hungarian spies were allegedly operating under diplomatic cover at Hungary’s permanent representation to the EU, particularly between 2015 and 2019. At that time, the mission was led by Oliver Varhelyi, who has since been appointed to the European Commission. Ujvari indicated that the Commission was not aware of any such allegations during Varhelyi’s vetting process, raising questions about oversight within the EU’s executive body.
This scandal significantly heightens tensions between Hungary and the EU, which has long criticized Orban’s government for actions perceived as undermining democratic institutions. The fallout from this investigation could have profound implications for Hungary’s standing within the EU and for its ongoing disputes with European leaders.
As this situation develops, observers are urged to monitor the EU’s next steps in response to these alarming allegations. The potential ramifications of this probe could reshape not only Hungary’s relationship with the EU but also influence the broader landscape of European politics.
