EU’s Simon Harris Urges Urgent Humanitarian Aid Boost for Gaza
UPDATE: At a crucial meeting in Luxembourg today, Simon Harris, Ireland’s Tánaiste, emphasized the EU’s essential role in significantly increasing humanitarian aid for Gaza. This urgent call comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and ongoing crises in Ukraine and Sudan.
Harris is set to discuss a range of pressing issues with fellow EU foreign ministers, including the critical situation in Ukraine, where Russian aggression continues to threaten European stability. “We gather at a critical moment for Ukraine and European security in the face of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression,” he stated, underlining his condemnation of recent missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Among the key points on the agenda, Harris plans to advocate for further sanctions against Russia while reaffirming Ireland’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s EU accession. “I look forward to hearing from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha,” he said, highlighting the importance of solidarity in these turbulent times.
Turning to the Middle East, Harris welcomed the recent announcement of a ceasefire and hostage release agreement, describing it as a “significant achievement.” He noted the release of 20 Israeli hostages after two years in captivity as a moment of hope for their families. “Every effort must also be made to find and release the bodies of deceased hostages,” he added, stressing the need for continued dialogue.
“Our focus must now be on preserving the ceasefire and flooding Gaza with desperately needed humanitarian aid,” Harris urged. He announced that Ireland has pledged an additional €6 million in humanitarian aid to support urgent food, medical care, and other vital services for the people of Gaza, who have endured unimaginable suffering.
On the situation in Sudan, Harris expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict, calling for a cessation of hostilities and a commitment to a permanent, peaceful political settlement. “We remain firmly committed to supporting the Sudanese people by providing vital humanitarian assistance,” he stated, emphasizing that urgent steps must be taken to ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid across the country.
As the meeting unfolds, the eyes of the world are on the EU to respond decisively and compassionately to these pressing crises. The humanitarian needs in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan call for immediate action and a robust international response.
