Experts Urge Irish Homes to Use Washing Up Liquid to Combat Winter Condensation

URGENT UPDATE: As temperatures are set to plunge this October, experts warn that Irish homes will face a common seasonal nuisance—window condensation. This phenomenon occurs when warm, humid indoor air meets chilly glass surfaces, leading to water droplets that can foster mold growth and associated health issues like asthma and eczema.
Fortunately, specialists are advocating a surprisingly simple solution: using a dash of washing up liquid. This method, highlighted by the Irish Mirror, leverages the surfactants in washing up liquid to lower water’s surface tension. When applied to windows, it prevents droplets from forming, creating an invisible film instead.
Home Things experts state, “By taking a small drop of washing up liquid and rubbing it into the condensation-prone window with a dry cloth, you can completely stop the issue altogether.” This quick fix can effectively combat dampness, mold, and mildew that typically accompany wet windows.
A bottle of washing up liquid can be purchased for as little as 99 cents at Dunnes Stores, making this an accessible and cost-effective remedy. However, experts at Glazing Refurbishment caution that this is merely a temporary solution. They explain, “The soap film will wear away over time, and the condensation may return. For a long-term solution, humidity levels must be managed, and insulation improved.”
With the World Health Organization recommending that living rooms maintain a minimum temperature of 21C and bedrooms 18C, it’s crucial for homeowners to adjust heating patterns to minimize condensation. Heating one room while keeping others cold can lead to increased dampness in unheated areas.
As October progresses, homeowners are urged to act promptly. If condensation appears, it’s vital to dry windows immediately to prevent mold establishment. Dark patches can be treated with a diluted bleach solution or antifungal treatments to halt further spread.
By implementing these strategies now, Irish households can proactively tackle moisture problems and maintain healthier living environments throughout the winter months.
