Ford’s EV Capri Launch Sparks Outrage Among Classic Fans
UPDATE: Ford’s relaunch of the iconic Capri as an electric vehicle has ignited a firestorm of backlash from fans of the original classic coupe, sparking urgent discussions about corporate decisions and brand loyalty.
Just announced, the new Capri, priced between €45,798 and €47,270, boasts a power output of 286 bhp and a claimed range of 598 km. However, real-world tests reveal an actual range closer to 501 km, and even less in Sport mode. This stark reality is fueling anger among enthusiasts who feel Ford has tarnished a beloved nameplate.
The original Ford Capri, launched in 1968 and produced until 1986, was celebrated as Europe’s answer to the Mustang, capturing the hearts of millions. Critics argue that Ford’s decision to modernize the Capri into what has been dubbed a “non-SUV, SUV” has disrespected the legacy of this cherished vehicle.
Local enthusiasts voiced their frustration, stating, “It doesn’t look anything like the Capri,” and “What the hell were they thinking?” This widespread dissent reflects a growing discontent with Ford’s recent direction. Once a dominant force in the Irish automotive market, Ford now finds itself struggling, ranking 12th in overall sales. The company has sold only 102 new Capris so far this year, a disappointing figure for a model with such a storied history.
“They’ve built a good car, for sure, but the management decisions have been wildly misguided,”
critics state, emphasizing that the new model bears little resemblance to the original in character or performance. Instead, it is built on a Volkswagen platform, raising questions about Ford’s commitment to its own heritage.
The new Capri accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds and has a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Despite this, fans lament the loss of the driving experience that the original Capri offered. Reviewers have noted that while the handling is competent for a vehicle of its size, the ride quality suffers on anything but perfect road surfaces, exacerbating the disconnect between expectations and reality.
Ford’s strategy to pivot towards an all-electric lineup has faced significant challenges, especially after the market for electric vehicles experienced a downturn. The decision to drop popular models like the Fiesta and Focus has alienated many long-time customers, leaving them questioning Ford’s future.
As the backlash continues, industry analysts are watching closely. Will Ford acknowledge the outcry and recalibrate its approach, or will it double down on its current strategy? The fate of the new Capri—and Ford’s reputation—hangs in the balance.
In light of this situation, the automotive community is left wondering: What will Ford do next? The future of the Capri and the direction of Ford’s electric vehicle line remain uncertain, making this a crucial moment for the iconic brand.
