Former Galway TD Colm Keaveney Admits Cocaine Driving Charge

BREAKING: Former Galway East TD Colm Keaveney has just admitted to driving under the influence of cocaine. This admission came during a court appearance at Tuam District Court today, marking a significant turn in a case that has seen multiple adjournments since June 2023.
Keaveney, who served as a member of both the Fianna Fáil and Labour parties, pled guilty to drug driving and two additional charges of driving without insurance. The court session, presided over by Judge James Faughnan, highlighted the seriousness of the situation, especially given Keaveney’s prior legal troubles, including two previous convictions and a recent fine of €250 along with a four-year driving ban.
The court revealed that Keaveney had been stopped in late July 2024 for failing to display a valid insurance disc. He also faced charges related to an incident in Boyle, Co Roscommon, where he failed to stop after colliding with another vehicle and did not provide a blood or urine sample.
In a poignant moment during the proceedings, Keaveney’s defense solicitor, Gearóid Geraghty, informed the court of the recent loss of both of Keaveney’s parents within a week. This personal tragedy has reportedly had a profound impact on him, exacerbated by the negative publicity surrounding his legal issues. Judge Faughnan acknowledged Keaveney’s “significant fall from grace” and emphasized the need for a probation report, particularly in light of the aftercare he is receiving after completing a drug treatment program.
The court has adjourned the case until November to allow for the completion of this report, indicating that further legal ramifications may still follow. This case not only underscores the serious consequences of drug driving but also highlights the personal challenges faced by those navigating public scrutiny and personal loss.
As developments unfold, this situation remains urgent for both Keaveney and the community. His case serves as a compelling reminder of the impact of substance abuse and the complex interplay between personal tragedy and public responsibility. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
