Fr Charlie Byrne Retires After 42 Years of Devoted Service

UPDATE: The parish of Carrigart and Meevagh bids an emotional farewell to Fr Charlie Byrne, who has officially retired after an impressive 42-year career in the priesthood. His retirement marks the end of an era that saw him dedicate over 25 years as the parish priest in Carrigart.
Fr Byrne, a native of Kilcar, was ordained in June 1981, beginning his journey in the parishes of Killymard and Townawilly. He also served as Chaplain at the Abbey Vocational School before embarking on a mission to Lima, Peru in 1987 alongside fellow priests from the Raphoe Diocese. Upon his return, he took up his role in the Carrigart and Meevagh parish in 1995, becoming the official parish priest in 2000.
The Raphoe Diocese expressed its heartfelt gratitude in a statement, saying, “We offer heartfelt gratitude for his years of dedicated ministry and wish him many blessings and restful years ahead.” This significant transition highlights the deep impact Fr Byrne has had on the community over his decades of service.
