The 69-year-old businessman, who died from a chest infection on July 2, 2023, was honored with an extravagant send-off that traveled through Nottingham and Manchester, showcasing his family’s deep love and respect.

Described by a family friend as “stupendous,” the gold coffin reportedly cost in the region of six figures and was specially ordered from abroad by Thompson’s son. The coffin’s arrival was delayed, resulting in the burial occurring nearly a month after Thompson’s passing, with the final farewell taking place on July 29.

The elaborate funeral procession included stops at several locations significant to Thompson’s life as a businessman, including tarmac yards and cemeteries where friends and family are buried. His heartbroken relatives aimed to celebrate his legacy and demonstrate that “there are some really good gypsy travellers,” according to the family friend.

Initially, the family intended to provide the best casket available, but plans evolved into the creation of a tomb, reflecting their heritage as a prominent gypsy traveller family. The decision was made to honor Thompson, the head of the family, who was admired for his wisdom and business acumen. “He could have had anything he wanted, but he was never a flash man,” said the friend.
