Free Admission for Under 18s at OPW Heritage Sites This August
The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced that visitors under the age of 18 will receive free admission to various heritage sites throughout the country for the entire month of August 2025. This initiative aims to encourage young people to explore and engage with their cultural heritage at no cost during the summer.
All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult during their visit. Several heritage sites in Donegal are participating in this pilot program, including Donegal Castle, Newmills Corn and Flax Mills, and Doe Castle, all of which will have free entry available. The Glebe Gallery is currently closed for renovations, but the Glebe Garden remains open for visitors.
Minister Encourages Exploration of Heritage
Launching the initiative, Kevin “Boxer” Moran, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, expressed his excitement about the program. He stated, “I am delighted to announce that all u18s will have free entry to OPW heritage sites this August, as part of a new pilot scheme. We are fortunate to have such incredible castles, monuments, and historic properties across the country that are invaluable educational resources.”
Moran also encouraged young people to take advantage of this opportunity. “Our sites are the perfect backdrop to meet friends, explore a fascinating site, and have a treat at the local café,” he added.
Planning Your Visit
To help families make the most of this initiative, a variety of itineraries are available for planning visits throughout August. Options range from day trips to weekday excursions and specialized itineraries designed for families. More information about these itineraries can be found on the Heritage Ireland website.
