URGENT UPDATE: A free historic walking tour in Fahan, Co Donegal, is set for Sunday, August 24, 2023, at 2:30 PM. History enthusiasts and nature lovers are invited to lace up their walking shoes for this engaging exploration of the village’s rich heritage.
The guided tour, which lasts approximately 90 minutes, starts at the Church of Ireland car park and is open to all ages. Participants will delve into Fahan’s fascinating past, nestled along the eastern shore of Lough Swilly, an area known for its scenic beauty and historical significance.
This walk is more than just a stroll; it’s a journey through time. Attendees will learn about the prehistoric fort of Grianan of Aileach and the ancient monastery founded by Saint Colmcille in the 6th century. The village’s name, Fathain Mura, pays homage to the first abbot of this once-renowned center of learning, which thrived for over 800 years before its destruction in the 16th century.
Among the highlights of the tour is the remarkable Saint Mura’s Cross, the only known early Greek inscription on a stone cross in Ireland. The cross, along with the cemetery artifacts, reflects Fahan’s significant ecclesiastical history.
The tour will also touch on the impact of the Plantation of Ulster and the area’s subsequent development, marked by the numerous Big Houses and graves dating from the 17th to the 20th century. Notably, the grave of nursing pioneer Agnes Jones and the intriguing resting place of Horatio Nelson draw interest for their unique connections to Fahan’s naval history.
Lough Swilly has served as a safe harbor for naval vessels for centuries, playing a pivotal role during World War I when the British North Atlantic Fleet anchored there.
The Fahan New Church, built in 1822, features a stunning stained-glass window by artist Evie Hone. Additionally, the Rectory was home to renowned hymnist Frances Alexander, known for classics such as “Once in Royal David’s City.”
This is a rare opportunity to engage with Fahan’s history amid its breathtaking landscapes. For more information on this event, visit www.fahanheritage.ie. Don’t miss your chance to experience this enriching historic tour – mark your calendars for August 24!
