Galway City Ring Road Decision Imminent as €1 Billion Funding Confirmed
UPDATE: A critical decision regarding the long-awaited Galway City Ring Road is expected by the end of January 2024, according to local Government Minister Noel Grealish. This announcement comes as funding exceeding €1 billion has been confirmed under the revised National Development Plan (NDP).
Minister Grealish, representing Galway West, emphasized the significance of this funding, stating it marks a “red-letter day for Galway.” He highlighted the importance of having financial resources in place immediately after An Coimisiún Pleanála announces its decision, allowing for a swift start on construction if approved.
He stated, “That decision, it is hoped, will be announced by the end of January – and, assuming they are in favour, the money will now be there to move the project forward quickly.” The proposed Ring Road, which aims to alleviate congestion and enhance connectivity in Galway City, has been a focal point of local infrastructure discussions for years.
In addition to the Ring Road funding, Seán Canney, Minister of State for International & Road Transport, confirmed that the Western Rail Corridor from Claremorris to Athenry via Tuam has also been prioritized in the Department of Transport’s Sectoral Plan for the NDP.
This development comes as Galway continues to face increasing traffic challenges, making the timely completion of the Ring Road essential for local residents and businesses. The funds will ensure that, should the decision lean favorably, there will be no delays in initiating the necessary construction work.
As the January deadline approaches, the community is encouraged to stay informed about the upcoming announcement, which could significantly influence the future of transport infrastructure in Galway City. With local officials rallying behind the project, the anticipation is palpable.
Residents and stakeholders are urged to follow the updates closely, as the outcome of this decision could herald a new era of improved connectivity for Galway. Stay tuned for more developments on this pressing issue.
