Galway Communities Shine in Urgent Pride of Place Judging

UPDATE: The communities of Clifden and Clarinbridge are making headlines as they vie for recognition in the prestigious 23rd annual IPB Pride of Place competition. Judges have already visited these remarkable initiatives, showcasing their commitment to community development and social wellbeing.
The Marconi Men’s Shed in Clifden has garnered significant attention as the first men’s shed in Ireland established exclusively for male family carers. This pioneering facility has transformed into a vital community hub, welcoming over 50 members aged between 43 and 85. The shed features a range of activities, including woodturning workshops and health-focused programs, significantly enhancing the quality of life for its participants.
In Clarinbridge, the judges explored the vibrant initiatives led by the Clarinbridge Tidy Towns group. Founded in 1979, this group has played a crucial role in fostering community spirit through projects that emphasize heritage, environmental protection, and social cohesion. Key landmarks, including The Green and the Cowpark/Kilcornan Walking Trails, reflect the village’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainability.
The gala dinner and awards ceremony are set for November 7 at the Strand Hotel in Limerick, where both communities hope to be celebrated for their outstanding contributions.
“The Marconi Men’s Shed in Clifden and the community of Clarinbridge really show what’s possible when people come together with passion, vision, and a shared sense of purpose,”
stated Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Cllr. David Collins.
The impact of these initiatives extends beyond mere recognition; they serve as a model for community development throughout Ireland. The Marconi Men’s Shed has become a lifeline for many, providing not only practical skills but also friendship and support, while Clarinbridge Tidy Towns has strengthened community bonds through events like Clarinbridge Market Day and Halloween on the Green.
Organized by peacebuilding charity Co-operation Ireland and sponsored by IPB Insurance, the Pride of Place awards celebrate the voluntary spirit that enriches communities across the island. This year’s competition underscores the importance of collaboration and dedication among community members.
As the competition progresses, both Clifden and Clarinbridge stand as shining examples of how collective effort can lead to significant positive change. Stay tuned for results from the gala, and witness how these communities continue to inspire others with their passion and commitment.
