Galway County Council Announces New Hedgecutting Policy Amid Criticism
UPDATE: Galway County Council is urgently addressing rising criticism over its hedgecutting practices amid claims that local roads have never been in worse condition. Just this week, councillors voiced their frustrations, emphasizing the immediate need for action to ensure public safety on overgrown roads.
During a council meeting, Councillor Tom Welby revealed that residents in his area resorted to funding private hedgecutting due to the lack of municipal response. “People are fed up and taking matters into their own hands,” he stated, highlighting the desperation felt by constituents.
Councillor Mary Hoade added that numerous local roads are so overgrown that they are unsafe for children, stating, “You couldn’t possibly let a child walk or cycle on them.” The urgency of this situation has prompted the council to draft a new hedgecutting policy, which will detail when and where cutting will occur and how these activities will be financed.
In a pointed remark, Councillor Declan Kelly criticized current bird nesting laws that restrict hedgecutting during the summer months, indicating that these regulations hinder necessary maintenance. Meanwhile, Councillor Gerry King lamented the lack of significant clearing throughout his time on the council, asserting that the local authority must confront the financial implications and prioritize immediate action.
In response to the criticisms, council management defended their record, claiming that they are already performing at the upper end of hedgecutting efforts compared to other local authorities nationwide. However, they cautioned that increasing hedgecutting activities may lead to budget cuts in other areas, a point that has raised concerns among councillors regarding the allocation of funds.
As the situation develops, residents and local leaders remain vigilant, calling for swift action to improve road safety. The council’s new hedgecutting policy is expected to be finalized soon, with significant implications for public safety and community well-being.
Stay tuned for further updates as Galway County Council navigates these pressing issues and responds to the needs of its residents.
