Galway Hosts National Age Friendly Awards with Minister O’Donnell Tonight
UPDATE: The National Age Friendly Awards are set to take place in Galway this evening, with Minister of State for Older People Kieran O’Donnell delivering the keynote address. The ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 PM at the Galmont Hotel, and it promises to spotlight significant achievements in initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of Ireland’s ageing population.
This event, hosted by Galway City and County Councils on behalf of the National AFI shared service, recognizes outstanding contributions to age-friendly projects across the nation. The awards aim to honor innovative efforts that cater to the needs of older citizens, fostering community support and engagement.
Galway is proudly represented with two nominations: the City Council for its impactful Positive Ageing Week – Local Heroes Campaign and the County Council for its forward-thinking 60+ Climate Drive. These initiatives highlight the commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for older adults.
Officials emphasize the importance of these awards in promoting awareness about age-friendly practices and encouraging local governments to implement similar strategies. The event not only celebrates past achievements but also aims to inspire future projects that can further enhance the quality of life for the elderly.
As the evening unfolds, attendees are expected to engage in discussions about best practices and share insights on developing age-friendly policies that resonate across communities. With a growing elderly population, the focus on creating supportive environments is more urgent than ever.
Stay tuned for updates from tonight’s event as Galway showcases its commitment to a brighter future for its older residents.
