Galway Secures €180,000 for Urgent Biodiversity Projects

UPDATE: Over €180,000 has been urgently allocated to 18 biodiversity projects in Galway for 2025, marking a significant investment in local environmental initiatives. This funding is part of a broader €3 million nationwide package aimed at empowering local authorities to enhance biodiversity efforts across Ireland.

The funding was confirmed by Housing Minister James Browne earlier today, emphasizing its alignment with the Government’s National Biodiversity Action Plan. This allocation is crucial for advancing projects that promote ecological sustainability in the region.

Among the funded initiatives, €66,000 will support The Hare’s Corner, which encourages landowners to boost biodiversity on their properties through the establishment of essential structures like hedgerows and ponds. In Galway City alone, over €91,000 has been earmarked for seven projects, including €34,000 dedicated to tackling invasive species and €12,700 for the Ballyloughane Beach Wetland Restoration Design aimed at creating safe habitats for wetland birds and invertebrates.

County Council-led initiatives are also receiving substantial support, with €89,000 allocated to 11 projects. This includes €16,000 for the removal of the Alpine newt and €11,000 for the Working with Nature Project, which aims to increase community awareness about biodiversity issues in County Galway.
