UPDATE: A 16-year-old boy has been convicted of raping his 13-year-old girlfriend during a relationship that lasted just weeks. The verdict, delivered today at the Central Criminal Court, follows a harrowing trial that illuminated the devastating impact of sexual violence on young victims.

The jury reached their decision after three and a half hours of deliberation on the sixth day of the trial. The incidents occurred in a County Galway housing estate between June and July 2023. The accused, who was just 14 years old at the time, faced charges of oral rape and rape but maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

Mr. Justice Patrick McGrath commended the jury for their attention and remanded the teenager on continuing bail, setting the sentencing date for November 3. A probation report has been ordered for that date, marking a critical next step in the judicial process.

Key evidence presented during the trial included a video interview with the victim, conducted by specialist gardaí in July 2023. The girl revealed that she had been “dating” the accused for about three weeks before the assault occurred. In her emotional testimony, she recounted that the accused pressured her for sex, repeatedly promising “tomorrow” before he ultimately raped her.

The victim described the traumatic encounter, noting that it took place at the accused’s home, where he forcefully pushed her shorts aside. Following the incident, she reached out to her mother via Snapchat just days later, expressing her distress and confusion about what had transpired.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Anne Rowland SC, highlighted the victim’s struggle to comprehend the situation, stating she initially did not realize she had been raped until her friends informed her of the reality of the situation. A screenshot of her Snapchat message was presented to the jury, revealing the depth of her fear and refusal to go to the authorities.

In addition to the emotional testimony, a forensic examination conducted shortly after the alleged incident revealed significant physical evidence. A specialist from a child and adolescent sexual assault treatment unit testified that over 20 bruises were found on the victim’s body, with some bruising described as “highly suspicious” in the context of sexual assault. Notably, bruising in the genital area was consistent with reports of “painful digital and vaginal penetration.”

As the case continues to unfold, the community remains deeply impacted by the implications of this verdict. The psychological toll on the victim, along with the broader message regarding the importance of addressing sexual violence among youth, cannot be overstated.

Moving forward, all eyes will be on the sentencing hearing scheduled for November 3, as the court determines the appropriate consequences for this grave crime. This case raises urgent conversations about consent, awareness, and the need for robust support systems for young victims of sexual violence.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as it continues to resonate throughout Galway and beyond.
