Galway’s Marty Morrissey Urges Support for Urgent Hospice Fundraiser

URGENT UPDATE: Marty Morrissey is calling on Galway residents to rally behind a crucial national fundraiser for Ireland’s hospices, taking place on September 25. As the ambassador for Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning for Hospice, Morrissey emphasizes the immediate need for community support to continue vital palliative care services.
In a heartfelt appeal, Morrissey shared his personal experiences witnessing the exceptional care provided by hospice staff. “Anyone who has visited a loved one in a hospice will be aware of the serenity, peace and joy,” he stated. He commended the “incredible” work done by nurses and care staff, referring to them as “angels.”
The annual charity event, organized by Together for Hospice, has raised an astonishing €47.6 million since its inception in 1992. Morrissey urges everyone in Galway to participate by visiting hospicecoffeemorning.ie and contributing to this essential cause.
Mary Nash, CEO of Galway Hospice, praised the event, noting its longevity and impact. “Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning for Hospice is now in its 33rd year, raising funds for hospice inpatient and community services across Ireland,” she said. Nash highlighted the importance of local coffee morning hosts, who selflessly dedicate their time to support their communities.
Last year alone, Galway Hospice aided 1,344 patients, including 340 in the Inpatient Unit and 1,017 in community services. This support is critical, especially as hospice services are often the primary source of care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses.
Col Campbell of Bewley’s Ireland expressed pride in supporting the event, stating, “Bewley’s, an iconic Irish brand, was founded on the strong principle of caring for people and communities.” He called on everyone across Ireland to host or attend a coffee morning to bolster hospice efforts.
The Coffee Morning takes place on September 25, but participants can host events on any suitable date. Those interested can register to host or donate at hospicecoffeemorning.ie or by calling 0818 995 996. For those unable to attend, online donations are also accepted to support the ongoing care provided by hospices.
The funds raised during this event are essential for maintaining specialist palliative care services, which are provided free of charge to those in need. Galway Hospice alone accounted for the care of 73% of individuals in the area who died with malignant diagnoses last year.
As Morrissey and local leaders rally the community, the call to action is clear: support is needed now more than ever. Join this critical effort to ensure that hospice services continue to provide compassion and care to patients and their families throughout Ireland.
