A member of An Garda Síochána has been suspended following the death of a 51-year-old man in Dublin city centre. The individual succumbed to serious injuries sustained during an interaction with police officers near the Holiday Inn on O’Connell Street on March 15, 2024. The man died several days later in hospital, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has initiated an independent investigation and launched a criminal inquiry into the matter. The incident occurred at approximately 4:15 AM and has been classified as involving serious harm to the individual, who later passed away. An on-call team of investigators from Fiosrú attended the scene immediately after the incident.

In light of these developments, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed the suspension of the officer involved. “A member of An Garda Síochána based in the Dublin region has been suspended from duty in connection with an ongoing investigation being carried out by the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú,” the spokesperson stated.

The investigation team is currently collaborating with both the Dublin City Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist to conduct a post-mortem examination. Fiosrú has appealed to the public for any witnesses to come forward. This includes requests for dashcam footage from passing vehicles, such as taxis, that may have captured the incident or the moments leading up to it.

Individuals with information that could assist the investigation are encouraged to reach out to Fiosrú at 0818 600 800 or via email at [email protected]. The investigation team is also working closely with the family of the deceased man, ensuring they receive support during this difficult time.

Under existing regulations, An Garda Síochána is legally obligated to report any incident involving death or serious harm that occurs following an interaction with its members. The ongoing investigation highlights the commitment to transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies in Ireland.
