Gardai Intensify Crackdown on Burglary Gangs Amid Winter Surge

URGENT UPDATE: An Garda Síochána is taking decisive action against organized burglary gangs, deploying elite armed intervention squads to tackle the rising threat. Detective Chief Superintendent Séamus Boland announced today that these gangs pose a significant risk to public safety, comparable to that of gangland murder teams.

In a bold move, gardai are now utilizing organized crime legislation to combat these criminals, focusing on their activities beyond just the act of burglary itself. Boland revealed that there are at least seven organized burglary groups currently operating across the island of Ireland. He described members of these gangs as “the lowest of the low” due to the fear and damage they inflict on communities.

Speaking at the launch of the winter phase of Operation Thor, Chief Supt Boland emphasized the serious nature of these operations. “We’re making strong use of the organized crime legislation and focusing on these groups as what they are—organized crime groups that are creating significant harm within our communities,” he stated.

This new strategy allows gardai to detain suspects for up to seven days upon court application, a substantial increase from the standard 24-hour detention laws. Boland confirmed that the resources allocated to intercepting these burglary gangs are on par with those used to tackle the most violent organized crime groups.

Despite a reported 25% drop in burglaries since 2022, with a 15.5% fall in the last year alone, Boland warned that burglaries typically spike during the darker winter months. He urged residents to be vigilant, advising them to lock doors and windows, utilize timers for lights, and set alarms to deter potential burglars.

Boland also highlighted the importance of public cooperation, urging individuals to report any suspicious vehicles, noting details such as color, make, and registration. “Burglars want nothing but cash and jewelry,” he said, underscoring the need for community awareness.

As this situation develops, gardai are collaborating with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) to share intelligence and enhance their response to these organized crime groups. The urgency of this crackdown reflects a growing commitment to ensuring public safety and dismantling the networks that threaten communities.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and proactive as authorities ramp up efforts to combat these criminal operations. The landscape of burglary in Ireland is shifting, and the commitment from law enforcement to protect citizens is stronger than ever.
