Gardaí Investigate Fatal Stabbing in Co Tipperary
Gardaí are continuing their investigation into the fatal stabbing of a middle-aged man in Co Tipperary. A 24-year-old woman remains in custody as they seek to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred late on Saturday night.
At approximately 23:30 on March 16, 2024, Gardaí responded to an emergency call that led them to a residence on Callanan’s Lane off Castle Street in Carrick-on-Suir. Upon arrival, they discovered a 47-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his chest. Despite efforts by paramedics to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman, who is reportedly known to the deceased, was arrested at the location. Following her arrest, she was transported to Clonmel Garda station where she is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. This provision allows for the detention of suspects for up to 24 hours. A medical examination was conducted upon her arrival, which led to a temporary suspension of her questioning until approximately 08:30 on March 17, 2024.
As the investigation unfolds, Gardaí have set up an incident room and are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the surrounding area. They are also seeking CCTV footage from local residences and businesses to help reconstruct the deceased’s final movements. The name of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin in the Czech Republic, although it is understood he had been residing in Carrick-on-Suir for several years.
On Sunday afternoon, Dr. Heidi Okkers, the State Pathologist, conducted a preliminary examination of the body at the scene. Following this, the man’s remains were transported to University Hospital Waterford for a postmortem examination, which is expected to provide crucial insights into the nature of his injuries.
Gardaí are likely to escalate their investigation from one of assault to murder based on the findings from the postmortem report. They are appealing to the public for any information related to the incident, urging anyone who may have relevant details to contact them at Clonmel Garda station at 052 617 7640.
As the community grapples with the shock of this violent act, Gardaí continue to pursue all leads to ensure a thorough investigation.
