Gardai Launch Urgent Christmas Road Safety Operation, 166 Lives Lost
UPDATE: An Garda Síochána has launched a critical road enforcement operation this morning, December 1, 2025, aimed at preventing tragic accidents during the festive season. The initiative comes as the number of road fatalities in Ireland reaches a staggering 166 this year, emphasizing the urgent need for heightened vigilance on the roads.
Beginning at 7 AM today, this enforcement campaign will run until 7 AM on January 5, 2026. Every officer on duty will actively monitor roadways, focusing on detecting drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as discouraging risky behaviors like speeding, mobile phone use, and not wearing seat belts.
The holiday season traditionally sees a surge in road usage for social gatherings, which increases the risk of fatal collisions. The Road Safety Authority has revealed alarming statistics, showing that 12% of drivers admitted to driving after drinking in the past year, with many choosing to drive home from pubs or restaurants. Moreover, 4% have driven after using illicit drugs.
Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne emphasizes the importance of responsible driving during this time.
“We are appealing to all those that will be taking to the roads over the Christmas period to slow down, take extra care, and ensure your driving gets your full attention. Never drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs,”
she stated.
Authorities report that nearly 8,000 drivers have been caught driving under the influence this year, alongside over 93,000 checkpoints conducted nationwide. The message is clear: if you choose to drink or use drugs, do not drive. Convictions will lead to losing your driving license.
Sam Waide, CEO of the Road Safety Authority, echoed this sentiment, remarking,
“Christmas should be a time of joy, not loss. Over a third of drivers killed between 2016 and 2020 were found to have alcohol in their system. These decisions leave empty seats at family tables and devastate communities.”
As the festive season approaches, authorities urge everyone to plan ahead. Use public transport or arrange for taxis to ensure a safe journey home. An Garda Síochána is committed to preventing road tragedies, and the message is resonating: No Garda wants to be calling to your family’s door this Christmas.
