Gardaí Launch Urgent Crackdown on Burglary Gangs Nationwide

URGENT UPDATE: An Garda Síochána has just announced a decisive crackdown on organized burglary gangs, implementing high-security measures typically reserved for violent crime units. Detective Chief Superintendent Séamus Boland revealed this strategy during the launch of the winter phase of Operation Thor, emphasizing that these gangs pose a significant threat to public safety.

In a bold move, Gardaí are deploying elite armed intervention squads to intercept these criminal groups. Chief Supt Boland stated, “From our analysis, we have at least seven organized crime groups operating on the island of Ireland focused primarily on burglaries. The Gardaí have recorded a 25% reduction in reported burglaries since 2022, including a 15.5% drop in the last year. However, Boland warned that burglaries tend to surge by 20% during the darker winter months, heightening the urgency for community vigilance.

He urged residents to safeguard their homes by locking doors and windows, using timers for lights, and activating alarms. “Burglars want nothing but cash and jewelry,” Boland cautioned, urging citizens to report any suspicious vehicles, including details like color, make, and registration.

In addition to increased operational resources, Gardaí have extended detention powers under the new legislation, allowing for up to seven days of detention following an arrest. This is a significant expansion from the standard 24-hour limit, designed to facilitate thorough investigations.
