UPDATE: Gardai have launched a criminal investigation into a shocking alleged gang attack on six-year-old Nia Naveen, who was reportedly subjected to racial abuse and physical assault outside her home in Waterford City.

The incident, which took place on Monday, August 4, 2025, has sent ripples of concern throughout the community. Nia’s family reported that she was punched in the face and told to “go back to India” by a group of children aged between eight and fourteen.

Shortly after The Irish Mirror revealed the harrowing details, Gardai confirmed they are actively investigating the matter. A spokeswoman stated, “Gardai responded to a report of an alleged assault in the Kilbarry area of Waterford City on the evening of Monday.” She added that investigations are ongoing and officers will be increasing patrols in the area.

Nia’s mother, Anupa Achuthan, expressed deep concern for her daughter’s wellbeing. “I feel so sad for her. I could not protect her,” she shared, recounting how Nia returned home visibly shaken just moments after she went outside to play with friends.

“She was very upset, she started crying. She couldn’t even talk; she was so scared,” Anupa said. “One of her friends said a gang of boys older than them hit her on the private parts with a cycle and five of them punched her in the face.”

In the wake of the attack, Anupa sought medical attention for her daughter, who continues to experience pain from the incident. “I took her to the hospital for a check-up, and I had to take her to her GP again for treatment,” she explained.

The attack has raised urgent questions about community safety and the handling of such incidents. Anupa, who has lived in Ireland for eight years, emphasized the importance of not punishing the young attackers but instead providing appropriate support and counseling. “Actions have to be taken appropriate to their age,” she insisted.

As the investigation unfolds, the community is rallying around Nia and her family, expressing outrage and solidarity. Local officials are expected to address the rising concerns regarding safety and racial issues in the area.

With Gardai actively pursuing leads, further updates are anticipated in the coming days. This incident highlights the urgent need for dialogue about racial tolerance and the protection of children in public spaces.
