Gardaí Urge Drivers to Follow Traffic Plan Amid Electric Picnic Chaos
UPDATE: Gardaí are sounding the alarm as traffic delays of up to two hours hit attendees heading to the Electric Picnic festival in Stradbally, Ireland. The chaos, occurring on September 7, 2023, is attributed to festivalgoers relying on Sat Nav systems rather than the official Garda Traffic Plan.
In a social media statement, Gardaí emphasized the consequences of ignoring their guidance: “Day one of traffic into Stradbally has shown us a clear pattern — some drivers are relying on Sat Nav instead of following the official Garda Traffic Plan. The result? Unnecessary delays, congestion for fellow concertgoers, disruption to local residents, and extra pressure on Garda resources.”
The festival kicked off with a massive influx of traffic, leading to significant congestion. As one Garda official noted, “It was extremely busy and as a result, there were delays.” Traffic flow improved as officials reiterated the importance of adhering to the designated routes.
Festival organizers reported that early access led to the swift occupancy of popular campsites. As of Thursday night, the Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol, Samuel Beckett, Ginsburg, and Janis Joplin campsites were completely full. The Electric Picnic official app and social media channels announced availability in alternative campsites, including Poets, Glitterball, Eco, and An Ghaeltacht.
Gardaí are urging all motorists to strictly follow the official traffic plan, which is fully signposted and staffed by officers. “Do not use Sat Nav near Stradbally. It will send you down unsuitable roads. The Garda plan is the safest and quickest way to the site,” they stated, highlighting that avoiding these guidelines can lead to further delays and complications.
As part of their commitment to safety, Gardaí remind attendees to allow extra time for travel, take breaks on long drives, always wear seatbelts, and refrain from using phones while driving. They are also conducting checkpoints throughout the festival to combat drug and drink driving. “Driving while impaired puts lives at risk and will not be tolerated,” Gardaí asserted.
With the festival sold out, authorities warn against purchasing resale tickets unless they come from verified sources. The situation is developing, and attendees are encouraged to remain patient and follow all official guidance for a smoother experience.
As the Electric Picnic continues, Gardaí remain vigilant, ensuring safety and order amidst the excitement. Stay tuned for further updates as this story unfolds.
