Gareth Sheridan SLAMS Catherine Connolly’s ‘Pro-Putin’ Comments
UPDATE: Presidential hopeful Gareth Sheridan has launched a fierce attack on Independent candidate Catherine Connolly, accusing her of making statements that could be perceived as a “pro-Putin stance.” This heated exchange comes just weeks before the upcoming presidential election in Ireland, set to take place in less than 13 weeks.
Sheridan, a multimillionaire entrepreneur, recently kicked off his campaign, claiming he has garnered support from councils in Tipperary and Laois. However, he still requires nominations from at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or a minimum of four local authorities to officially secure a spot on the ballot. Despite the absence of confirmed nominations, Sheridan is already making waves in the political arena.
The controversy erupted after Connolly criticized the European Union’s position, stating it has “lost its moral compass” and expressed distrust towards the US, England, and France. She emphasized her commitment to neutrality, condemning the arms industry associated with these nations for contributing to global bloodshed. Connolly stated, “The US, England and France are deeply entrenched in an arms industry which causes bloodshed across the world.”
In response, Sheridan contended that her remarks reflect “Anti-EU politics” and a dangerous misstep for a presidential candidate. He stated, “Ms. Connolly is hoping to be our next President, and her claim that Ireland can’t trust the United States, the United Kingdom, and France is an ill-judged over-step.” Sheridan highlighted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly thanked the EU, USA, and UK for their support in defending Ukraine against Russian aggression.
As the political landscape heats up, Sheridan’s comments are likely to reverberate throughout the election campaign. The tension between the candidates underscores the critical issues facing Ireland as it navigates its position on the global stage.
Connolly’s team has been contacted for a response to Sheridan’s accusations. As the election approaches, voters will be watching closely to see how this political feud unfolds and influences public opinion.
