Glass Inclusion in Deposit Return Scheme Remains Uncertain
UPDATE: The future of glass in Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme remains unclear, as officials confirm that plans for inclusion are not on the immediate agenda. Since its launch 20 months ago, the scheme has led to a remarkable surge in recycling rates, with Re-turn reporting an additional 800 million plastic containers recycled annually compared to pre-scheme figures.
The urgency for expanding the scheme is underscored by Ireland’s need to meet EU targets and avoid potential fines. While the success of the scheme has prompted discussions, Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn, stated that there are “no plans to include other products yet.”
Experts from other countries have long advocated for the inclusion of glass, emphasizing its environmental benefits. “Nobody [in Denmark] would dream of taking glass out of the scheme,” stated Lars Krejberg Petersen from Dansk Retursystem, highlighting the significant uplift in environmental impact that could result from glass’s participation.
As of now, the focus remains on maintaining and enhancing the current structure. Foley mentioned, “The whole model is working well,” indicating a strategy centered on optimizing existing operations before expanding the scope.
The ongoing conversations with the government reflect a growing recognition of the scheme’s importance in Ireland’s environmental efforts. However, for those eagerly awaiting the inclusion of glass, the timeline remains uncertain.
Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops. The urgency of enhancing recycling efforts in Ireland cannot be overstated, as environmental advocates push for more comprehensive measures to protect the planet.
