The leader of a gun-running operation was sentenced to 12 years in prison for smuggling firearms from the United States to Ireland. Mark McCourt, aged 34 and residing in Edencrieve, Newry, Co Down, was apprehended during a Garda raid where authorities seized components for six assault rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

McCourt received his sentence from the Special Criminal Court on October 30, 2024. He had previously pleaded guilty in July to charges related to his involvement in a criminal organization that imported restricted weapons between February 2023 and July 2024, as well as possession of firearms. During the proceedings, evidence revealed that McCourt had offered prospective customers a shocking deal, including ten pipe bombs as part of a €75,000 transaction for smuggled weapons and ammunition.

Details of the Operation and Arrest

Detective Inspector Shane McCartan of the Garda Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau led the investigation into the gang’s activities. He testified that a firearms technician was able to reassemble 82 gun parts seized during a raid at a property in Co Louth into six assault rifles and twelve pistols. In addition, authorities recovered around 1,200 rounds of 9mm ammunition and nearly 400 rounds of .223 caliber from a shed in Ardee, Co Louth. This raid occurred on July 19, 2024, when McCourt and his associates were arrested.

The Garda Emergency Response Unit encountered challenges when attempting to execute a search warrant, as it took them 15 minutes to gain entry after McCourt had pulled down the shutter. In court, Detective Inspector McCartan expressed his firm belief that a criminal organization was operating under McCourt’s “control and direction,” with the primary aim of importing firearms components from the US for assembly and distribution to other criminal groups.

Judgment and Court Remarks

During the sentencing, Ms. Justice Karen O’Connor, along with Judges Elma Sheahan and Marie Keane, highlighted the severity of McCourt’s actions. They noted that he was “caught red-handed” and appeared to exhibit a degree of bravado in his dealings. The court criticized McCourt’s casual references to the use of weapons in serious criminal activities, including instilling fear and intimidation within communities.

Justice O’Connor remarked that McCourt’s behavior suggested he was running a business for personal gain, with no evidence to indicate he faced any threats. The court categorized the arms smuggling offences as being at the “top end of the scale.” McCourt was sentenced to 12 years for arms smuggling, based on a 15-year headline sentence that included a 20 percent reduction for his early guilty plea. He also received concurrent sentences of 10 years for four counts of firearms possession, which were reduced from 12.5 years on similar grounds. The remaining counts on the indictment were also taken into consideration.

McCourt’s case underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organized crime and the illegal arms trade, a concern that continues to impact communities both in Ireland and beyond.
