Heartbreaking Funeral for 9-Year-Old Joey Forker in Dungloe
UPDATE: The community of Dungloe is mourning the tragic loss of 9-year-old Joey Forker, who died in a devastating machinery accident at his home in Meenmore, Co Donegal, last Friday. Hundreds gathered at St Crona’s Church for an emotional funeral mass today, August 25, 2023, to celebrate the life of a boy whose spirit touched so many.
Mourners braved heavy rain and dark skies to pay their respects to Joey, whose white coffin was adorned with cherished photographs from his young life. His family, including heartbroken parents Joey and Audrey, brothers Jason and Jordan, and grandfather Willie, received an outpouring of support from a tightly-knit community that cherished Joey’s joy and laughter.
Fr Johnny Moore, the parish priest, comforted attendees with words of love and remembrance, urging them to express their grief. “You will always carry Joey in your hearts,” he said, emphasizing the unique bond they shared.
Joey’s life was celebrated through heartfelt tributes highlighting his love for machinery, animals, and sports. Symbolic gifts placed at the altar included toy diggers, boxing gloves, and a photo of his beloved family dog, Holly. The emotional atmosphere was heightened by real Twin Cam cars lined up outside the church, each bearing Joey’s name, reflecting his passion for drifting.
Just months prior, Joey made his First Holy Communion in the same church. His Holy Communion workbook, filled with hopes and dreams for his family, was lovingly placed on his coffin alongside his baptism shawl, worn by his brothers during their own baptisms at St Crona’s.
Joey’s godfather, James Coll, praised his spirit, stating, “Though his time was far too short, Joey lived every day with joy and confidence.” He emphasized the profound impact Joey had on everyone around him, saying, “We are blessed to have known him.”
Following the mass, Joey was laid to rest at Magheragallon Cemetery in Gaoth Dobhair, where family and friends gathered to bid a final farewell to a boy who brought immense joy and love to all. As the community reflects on this heartbreaking loss, they remain united in their support for Joey’s family during this profoundly difficult time.
Residents of Dungloe and beyond are encouraged to share their memories and tributes online, ensuring that Joey’s legacy of love and laughter continues to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew him.
