Hill Walker Airlifted After Fall in Bluestack Mountains

UPDATE: A hill walker was urgently airlifted to Sligo University Hospital after suffering a serious back injury during a fall in the breathtaking Bluestack Mountains on September 24, 2023. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM at the remote location of Lough Belshade, nestled between Glenfin and Lough Eske.
The volunteer team from the Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) was swiftly mobilized to assist the injured walker. A full team callout was initiated, with the hasty response team reaching the casualty first to deliver immediate medical assessment and stabilization.
As the situation developed, it became evident that a helicopter evacuation was necessary. The Sligo-based Rescue 118 helicopter was dispatched and successfully winched the casualty to safety. This critical operation concluded with the team returning to base by 7:07 PM.
A spokesperson for DMRT expressed gratitude, stating, “Our thanks to Malin Head Coastguard and Rescue 118 for their assistance. We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.”
The DMRT operates as a dedicated emergency response service in extreme terrains across County Donegal. Comprised entirely of volunteers, the team stands ready for emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
This incident highlights not only the risks associated with hiking in remote areas but also the vital role of emergency services in ensuring public safety. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, hikers are urged to remain vigilant and prepared when exploring mountainous regions.
