Humphreys Returns to Politics as Pressure Mounts on Martin

The race for the Irish presidency is intensifying as former Minister Heather Humphreys makes a surprising return to politics, positioning herself as a strong contender for the Fine Gael nomination. Her entry comes at a time when Taoiseach Micheal Martin is facing increasing pressure from members of Fianna Fail to introduce a candidate for the upcoming election following the withdrawal of Mairead McGuinness due to health concerns.

Humphreys, who previously announced her retirement from politics just nine months ago, declared her intention to run on local radio, stating, “I’ve had a good rest, the tank is full again.” Her sudden re-entry sets the stage for a competitive two-week nomination process against Sean Kelly, a former GAA president, for the Fine Gael candidacy. Party insiders believe Humphreys holds a significant advantage, with one source expressing skepticism about Kelly’s chances of even securing enough nominations.

According to internal party polling, Humphreys is the early front-runner among Fine Gael members. The nomination requires support from 20 members of the parliamentary party, 25 councillors, and five executive council members. “Sean has no chance against Heather,” one senior party member told The Irish Sun. “If he gets the 20 members of the parliamentary party he needs for a formal nomination, I’d be surprised. Both Sinn Féin and Fianna Fail have yet to announce their candidates, although pressure is mounting within Fianna Fail for Martin to field a candidate. MEP Billy Kelleher has urged party leadership to take an active role in the election, emphasizing the party’s prominence in Irish politics.
