UPDATE: Iarnród Éireann has just submitted a planning application to Limerick City and County Council for a new railway station at Moyross. This critical development aims to enhance public transport accessibility for the growing population in the area, connecting residents to Limerick city centre, Galway, Cork, and Dublin.

The proposed station will be strategically located near Corpus Christi Primary School and the Moyross Community Enterprise Centre. Access will be provided adjacent to Corpus Christi Parish Church and through Moyross Avenue via Millennium Park. According to a spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann, this station will significantly improve transport links, supporting the urban regeneration of Moyross.

The new facility will not only facilitate travel to major urban centers but will also connect commuters to local attractions such as Thomond Park and the TUS Gaelic Grounds, as well as educational institutions like the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS). The project is designed to integrate with the Limerick City and County Council’s proposed University Avenue scheme and the National Transport Authority’s BusConnects and CycleConnects initiatives.

Subject to planning approval and funding allocation, construction could begin in 2026, with an anticipated build time of 15 months. Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am delighted to see this rail project progressing for the people of Moyross and Limerick.” He emphasized the importance of the station in achieving sustainable growth and improving access to educational and recreational facilities.

Minister of State Seán Canney echoed this sentiment, highlighting the submission as part of a broader strategy to enhance rail infrastructure across the nation. He stated, “Investing in our rail stations is key as we seek to implement the vision set out in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review.”

The Moyross station is a pivotal element of the Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (LSMATS) 2040 and aligns with objectives outlined in the Limerick Development Plan 2022-2028. It aims to support the National Strategic objective of ‘Compact Growth’ as outlined in the National Development Plan 2021-2030.

Iarnród Éireann’s chief executive, Jim Meade, noted that the station represents a key strategic development for the area. He stated, “This station is a key provision of LSMATS and will provide excellent connectivity for the existing community of Moyross and for future communities.”

Hugh Creegan, acting CEO of the National Transport Authority, emphasized the broader implications of the project. He stated, “The proposed new station for Moyross represents far more than just an investment in Public Transport; it’s an opportunity to regenerate and reconnect local communities.”

The project is backed by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority and is part of the Department’s Pathfinder Programme, which consists of sustainable mobility projects designed to foster local development.

As this planning process unfolds, residents of Moyross and Limerick eagerly await further developments regarding the new railway station, which promises to enhance connectivity and support community growth in the region. Stay tuned for updates as this significant transportation project progresses.
