UPDATE: Spain and Portugal are facing a red alert as record-breaking heatwaves fuel the risk of devastating wildfires. Authorities have confirmed that temperatures are soaring between 36 and 44 degrees Celsius, prompting urgent measures to protect vulnerable areas.

Portugal declared a state of alert on July 15, 2023, with the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, announcing a ban on access to forested regions. “We must act decisively to prevent wildfires amidst these extreme conditions,” Amaral stated. Prohibitions on fireworks, outdoor work, and the use of machinery will be enforced, with five northern districts under red alert on Monday and Tuesday.

Spain is also grappling with the heat as a mass of hot air from North Africa descends on the Iberian Peninsula. The country is enduring its second heatwave of the summer, with temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in regions like Andalucía and Extremadura. The peak heat is anticipated on Monday and Tuesday, as the Ministry of Health issues a “red risk” health alert for hundreds of municipalities.

Elsewhere in Europe, the heatwave extends its grip. Nordic countries are experiencing a “truly unprecedented” rise in temperatures, with Finland recording three consecutive weeks above 30 degrees Celsius. Norway and Sweden are also facing severe heat, alongside storms and lightning strikes that have ignited wildfires.

In eastern Poland, severe weather warnings have been issued, forecasting strong winds of up to 80 km/h and heavy rainfall exceeding 45 mm. Areas such as the Warmian-Masurian and Masovian Voivodeships are particularly at risk, with temperatures anticipated to hover around 30 degrees Celsius.

As the situation escalates, officials urge residents to remain vigilant. The intense heat and dry conditions are expected to persist until at least Thursday, with the potential for wildfires posing a significant threat to life and property.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with firefighters on high alert in both Spain and Portugal. The public is advised to stay indoors during peak temperatures and to follow all official guidelines for safety.

With climate extremes affecting millions, the urgency to address these challenges has never been more critical. Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds and the heatwave impacts continue to spread across Europe.
