IFI Announces €1 Million for Urgent River Restoration Projects
UPDATE: Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has just announced a groundbreaking initiative to allocate over €1 million for transformative river restoration projects across the country in 2026. This significant funding aims to enhance healthy habitats for fish in rivers nationwide, ensuring sustainable ecosystems for future generations.
In a bold move, IFI’s Habitats and Conservation Scheme previously awarded a total of €771,294 to 27 projects in 14 counties this year alone, impacting regions such as Carlow, Cavan, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kildare, Laois, Louth, Leitrim, Mayo, Meath, Offaly, Sligo, and Tipperary. The funding directly supports vital initiatives under two competitive programs: the Salmon and Sea Trout Rehabilitation, Conservation and Protection Fund and the Midland Fisheries Fund.
Funding for these essential projects is generated through salmon and sea trout angling, commercial fishing licenses, and the sale of fishing permits. Eligible angling clubs, fishery owners, and other stakeholders are now invited to express their interest in applying for grants. The call for 2026 funding is officially open, with expressions of interest accepted until December 11, 2025.
For those interested in securing funding for river restoration, full application details are available on the Inland Fisheries Ireland website.
This initiative not only revitalizes river ecosystems but also underscores the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts. The urgency of maintaining healthy fish habitats cannot be overstated, as it directly affects biodiversity and the overall health of our waterways.
As the deadline approaches, stakeholders are encouraged to act swiftly to ensure their projects are considered. This is a critical moment for river restoration in Ireland, and the impact of these funds will be felt for years to come.
