UPDATE: Ireland just recorded its hottest day of 2025, with temperatures soaring to 31.1C at the Mount Dillon weather station in Co Roscommon on July 12. This extreme heat, however, is quickly overshadowed by an unusual surge in rainfall across the country, leaving many residents with mixed memories of the month.

According to the latest report from Met Éireann, July nearly achieved an official heatwave, but the arrival of thunderstorms ended the hot spell. While some regions experienced above-average temperatures, others were drenched in rain, highlighting the island’s unpredictable weather patterns. The eastern half of Ireland bore the brunt of the downpours, with parts of Galway and Dublin receiving up to 1.5 times their average July rainfall.

The month started off relatively cool, but a high-pressure system kicked in around July 10, causing a dramatic temperature rise that lasted until July 13. During this period, temperatures exceeded 27C on each day, creating conditions ripe for an official heatwave declaration. However, the respite from heat was short-lived, as thunderstorms rolled in, bringing with them heavy rain.

The contrasting weather has produced striking regional differences. For instance, the weather station in Knock, Co Mayo recorded an average of just three hours of sunshine daily, while Johnstown, Co Wexford basked in over six hours. Meanwhile, parts of Cavan received only half of their typical July rainfall, showcasing the island’s diverse climate experiences.

Overall, July 2025 was marked by an average temperature of 16.59C, which is 1.74C above the long-term average from 1961-1990 and 1.21C above the more recent average from 1991-2020. Notably, this month has emerged as the warmest in two years, breaking records and highlighting the ongoing shifts in Ireland’s climate patterns.

As the month draws to a close, the weather is expected to remain cloudy and drier, particularly in the west, where mist and light rain will continue to affect many areas. Residents are urged to stay tuned for further updates as the Irish weather remains unpredictable.
