Ireland Successfully Evacuates Sick Children from Gaza for Treatment
UPDATE: Ireland has just completed a crucial medical evacuation of seven sick children from Gaza, as confirmed by government officials. This operation, which took place on Saturday evening, marks a significant humanitarian effort to provide vital healthcare to young patients in desperate need.
The evacuation was part of a government initiative approved in September 2024, following an urgent appeal from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to address the pressing health needs in Gaza. These children, accompanied by 29 family members, were transported overland to Jordan before being flown to Dublin with the support of an Irish medical team and a plane provided by the Norwegian Government.
Tanáiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Harris, expressed heartfelt relief upon their arrival, stating, “These children and their families have been through a horrific ordeal. They will receive excellent medical care while here in Ireland as they recover from their experiences.” His remarks highlight the emotional significance of this operation, reflecting the dire circumstances these families have faced.
In a groundbreaking achievement, this is the first time Ireland has coordinated a medical evacuation directly from Gaza City. Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, acknowledged the complexity of the operation, which required extensive collaboration among multiple government departments and international partners. “The dedication, professionalism, and humanity shown by all involved reflects the very best of public service,” she noted.
The Irish government has committed to receiving up to 30 pediatric patients from Gaza in total, continuing to evaluate each case based on individual medical needs and available capacity. The children and their families have been provided with housing managed by the Irish Red Cross, which is offering essential support, including caseworker and translation services to ensure seamless access to healthcare.
All patients underwent health screenings prior to their travel to Dublin, and the Health Service Executive (HSE) will provide comprehensive psycho-social assessments for both patients and caregivers. Dr. Ciaran Browne, HSE National Medical Evacuation Coordinator, stated, “We are delighted to bring these children and their families to Ireland for treatment that will greatly improve their lives.”
As these young patients begin their medical assessments over the coming days, the operation stands as a beacon of hope amid the turmoil in Gaza. Niall O’Keeffe, Head of International and Migration at the Irish Red Cross, emphasized the profound impact of this initiative. “We cannot begin to comprehend the deeply traumatic experiences that these children and their families have survived,” he said.
The Department of Justice coordinated visa requirements for the children and their families, while the Department of Social Protection is facilitating access to welfare and other necessary supports. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of multiple agencies to provide the best possible care for these vulnerable individuals.
This developing story highlights the ongoing humanitarian efforts and the critical need for support in the region. As Ireland continues to welcome these children, the focus remains on their recovery and the necessary healthcare they will receive.
