UPDATE: Gena Heraty, an Irish humanitarian worker, has been released following her kidnapping in Haiti. Simon Harris, the Tánaiste of Ireland, expressed his “relief and delight” after the announcement was made earlier today. Heraty was abducted on August 3, 2025, along with seven others, including a child, from an orphanage in Kenscoff, a suburb of Port-au-Prince.

The release of the hostages, confirmed by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, comes after weeks of intense concern for their safety. The group was reportedly taken by associates of the notorious gang leader, Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier, known for orchestrating violent kidnappings across Haiti.

“This has been an extraordinarily stressful time for Gena’s family, friends, and colleagues,” Harris stated in a press conference held in Copenhagen. He praised Heraty as “an incredible humanitarian worker” who has dedicated over 30 years to helping vulnerable children in Haiti.

The family of Gena Heraty shared their overwhelming relief in a statement, saying, “We are so delighted to be able to share that Gena, and all those taken with her, have been released.” They thanked those involved in securing the hostages’ safe return, specifically acknowledging the efforts of Harris and the team at the Department of Foreign Affairs, including Geraldine Byrne Nason, the Irish Ambassador to the United States.

The Heraty family expressed gratitude for the global support received during this harrowing ordeal. “The outpouring of concern, love, prayers, and solidarity shown for Gena and to us has been a huge source of comfort,” they stated. They also emphasized the need for privacy as Gena and the other released hostages recover from their traumatic experience.

Despite this positive outcome, the family urged attention to the ongoing violence in Haiti, stating, “We continue to hold Haiti in our hearts and hope for peace and safety for all those who are affected by the ongoing armed violence and insecurity there.”

As the situation unfolds, authorities are monitoring developments in Haiti closely. The international community remains engaged, hoping for stability in the region amidst persistent security threats.

This breaking news story highlights the resilience of humanitarian workers like Gena Heraty, and the urgent need for safety and peace in Haiti.
