Irish Language Sparks Surge of Support for Connolly’s Campaign
UPDATE: The race for the Irish presidency is heating up as the Irish language emerges as a pivotal factor in voter sentiment. With just days left until the election, candidates Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys are under scrutiny, particularly regarding their fluency in Irish. The new British ambassador, Kara Owens, has notably embraced the language, delivering her introduction in Irish during a recent video, further energizing discussions around its significance.
Polling data from July 2025 indicates that while only 3% of voters listed fluency in Irish as their top priority, the mere inclusion of this option in the Irish Times poll signals a shift. Political editor Pat Leahy suggests that increased awareness could lead to greater emphasis on language fluency among voters, especially the younger demographic.
In a recent vox-pop among students at Trinity College, overwhelming support for Connolly was evident. Of ten young voters surveyed, seven expressed a preference for Connolly, highlighting her ability to speak Irish as a crucial factor. Niamh O’Sullivan, a 19-year-old student, stated, “As the leader of the country, you should know the national language. Without the Irish language, nothing separates us from the British or Americans.”
Michael Murphy, aged 30, echoed the sentiment, affirming that while Irish fluency is not his main reason for supporting Connolly, it holds value in representing Irish culture. Many young voters, like Aidan and Sally, recognize the language’s importance without making it the sole deciding factor for their votes.
The rising interest in the Irish language is being fueled by cultural movements, as seen with groups like Kneecap and the acclaimed Irish-language film An Cailín Ciúin. Osgur Ó Ciardha, founder of the pop-up Gaeltacht, noted a marked shift in attitudes, stating, “It is almost like a tsunami now,” illustrating the growing appreciation for the language among younger generations.
Amid these developments, the Cumann Gaelach at Trinity College has expanded significantly, boasting over 450 members. As students gather for events like Anraith agus Arán (soup and bread), the atmosphere reflects a cultural revival that embraces Irish as a vibrant part of identity.
The perception of the Irish language is evolving. Young voices, like Réiltín Ní Churnáin, a 20-year-old student, emphasize the language’s role in fostering community and connection to identity. “Speaking Irish feels very tied to my identity as an Irish person,” she said. This sentiment is echoed by many who see Irish as a symbol of a modern, inclusive Ireland.
As the 2025 presidential election approaches, the role of the Irish language is expected to be increasingly significant. Julian de Spáinn, general secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge, remarked on the changing landscape, noting that for young voters, the ability to speak Irish could become a key driver in their electoral choices.
With just days remaining before the election, the question looms: Will Catherine Connolly’s fluency in Irish provide the edge needed to secure the presidency? As voters engage deeply with cultural identity, the implications for Connolly’s campaign are profound. Young voters are not only seeking a candidate who speaks Irish but one who embodies a progressive and authentic vision for Ireland’s future.
As this story develops, the impact of the Irish language on the electoral landscape will be closely watched. Share your thoughts on this evolving narrative and its potential to reshape Irish politics.
