Jim Gavin, the presidential candidate for Fianna Fáil, has openly stated that his party is not adequately addressing the ongoing housing crisis in Ireland. During a recent event at the Rochestown Park Hotel, which marked the beginning of the party’s think-in, Gavin emphasized the urgency of the issue. His comments come as he engages with voters, having canvassed in Douglas prior to the event.

Speaking to reporters, Gavin expressed his concerns after meeting college students who are apprehensive about their housing situations post-graduation. “It’s a huge challenge,” he remarked. “For me, it has to be at the forefront of any policy. Housing is a huge issue, and the party has made it clear it’s one of their number one issues.” He underscored the need for a focused approach from both the party and the government to resolve this pressing matter.

While acknowledging the government’s progress, Gavin asserted, “It’s not good enough yet.” He called for enhanced policies from the country’s executive and Dáil Éireann to effectively tackle the housing crisis. “All I can do from my perspective if I am fortunate enough to get elected is keep the pressure, keep the focus on housing that needs to be solved,” he stated.

When asked about his willingness to criticize the Housing Minister, Gavin affirmed his readiness to advocate for those affected. “What I am saying is I’m very aware of the limits of the role but also aware of the unifying power that the president can have. If I need to speak out for those whose voice needs to be heard, I will speak up.”

Gavin’s candidacy is set against the backdrop of significant public concern surrounding housing, an issue that has been brought to light by various advocacy groups, including the Women of Honour. This group was formed by former and current members of the Irish Defence Forces to address allegations of misogyny and sexual misconduct within the military. Having served as an officer in the Defence Forces for 20 years, Gavin expressed shock at the allegations. “During my time in the Defence Forces, I had a very positive experience, and I acknowledge that not everybody had that experience,” he said, adding that he fully supports the Women of Honour in their endeavors to highlight these critical issues.

Recent polling data from a Red C Survey for the Business Post indicates that Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys is currently leading the presidential race with 22%. Jim Gavin garnered 18% support, while Independent candidate Catherine Connolly received 17%. Notably, 36% of respondents indicated no preference among the candidates. Gavin also noted that a significant portion of Fianna Fáil supporters, specifically 29%, are inclined to vote for Humphreys, with only 12% expressing a preference for him.

In response to the polling, Gavin stated, “From my perspective, polls, predictions, the bookies, I have no interest in them. My focus is on my campaign, and that will be all the way through to October 24, 2023.” As the election date approaches, Gavin’s commitment to prioritizing housing issues remains a focal point of his campaign, positioning him as a candidate keenly aware of the challenges facing many Irish citizens today.
