UPDATE: A 55-year-old Kerry man is on trial for the alleged murder of his mother, 75-year-old Miriam Burns, following a chilling exchange with gardai. During a recent court session, Billy Burns reportedly exclaimed, “I didn’t kill the b***h” when confronted with accusations regarding his mother’s death.

The trial, held at the Central Criminal Court, revealed disturbing details about the relationship between Burns and his mother. Testimonies from family members painted a picture of a tumultuous history marked by violence and abuse. His sister, Sharon Kelleher, testified that their mother often bore the brunt of Billy’s outbursts, stating, “She never did anything to bring that on. All she did was try to help.”

Miriam Burns was found dead at her home in Ardshanavooley, Killarney, between August 12 and 15, 2022. The prosecution alleges that Billy Burns was responsible for her death, while the defense claims he was in a manic episode due to bipolar disorder at the time of the incident.

During the trial, it was revealed that in 1993, Burns had previously broken his mother’s jaw. Kelleher emphasized that their mother had always tried to foster a relationship with her son, even when he was at his most dangerous. “She knew from experience that Billy could be dangerous,” Kelleher added, highlighting the emotional toll on their family.

The prosecution’s opening arguments, delivered by Sean Guerin SC, indicated that both state and defense psychiatrists agree Burns was experiencing mental health crises during the alleged murder. However, the State maintains that he understood the gravity of his actions and should be held accountable.

Family dynamics were further explored as Burns’ younger brother, Shane Burns, recounted a childhood filled with fear of his older brother’s unpredictable rage. He noted that their mother, who raised four children alone, often faced verbal and physical abuse, yet chose not to report it. Shane described a shocking incident where Billy scalded their sister with an iron during an argument.

On the day of Miriam’s death, concerns grew among family members when they hadn’t heard from her over the weekend. On August 15, 2022, Sharon and Shane called neighbors who discovered their mother unresponsive in her sitting room.

In a crucial revelation, Inspector John Kelly of the Kerry Garda Division stated that Billy Burns was arrested on August 16, 2022. During questioning, he admitted to being at his mother’s house the night before her death, claiming they had an argument over money. He also acknowledged using drugs, including crack cocaine, before arriving at her home.

CCTV footage captured Burns cycling away from his mother’s residence on the evening of her death, raising further suspicions. Forensic teams discovered remnants of fires near Ross Castle, where evidence linked to Miriam Burns was found, including her blood on a cushion in Burns’ rucksack.

Throughout his interviews, Burns maintained his innocence, stating, “I didn’t kill the b***h,” despite evidence to the contrary. The trial continues, with jurors grappling with the complexities of mental health and familial abuse.

As this case unfolds, the implications of the tragic events are profound, highlighting the urgent need for awareness around mental health and domestic violence issues.
