Kilkenny Cemetery Faces Capacity Crisis; Urgent Changes Announced

URGENT UPDATE: Foulkstown Cemetery in Kilkenny is nearing full capacity, prompting St Patrick’s Parish to implement immediate changes affecting burial rights. Local families are deeply concerned as the parish announced that starting October 1, requests to purchase burial rights will be limited to parishioners and those who have already pre-purchased rights.
The cemetery, located on Waterford Road, has reached a critical point where families with existing graves are advised to utilize these sites for future burials, provided space allows. Fr Kieran O’Shea from St Patrick’s Pastoral Centre emphasized the importance of these measures in the parish’s weekly newsletter, stating, “We must consider the future of our community’s resting place.”
In a bid to manage the limited space, the parish has also opened the option for current owners of burial rights to transfer these rights to the next generation. This move aims to ensure that families can maintain their connections to the cemetery amidst growing concerns about capacity.
Families wishing to inquire about burial rights or transfers should contact Fr O’Shea directly at [email protected] or in writing at St Patrick’s Pastoral Centre, Loughboy, Kilkenny.
The situation highlights an urgent need for community dialogue about the future of Foulkstown Cemetery. Stakeholders are encouraged to engage with parish officials to explore potential solutions to this pressing issue.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops. Families are urged to act swiftly to secure their burial rights and ensure their loved ones are honored in the community’s final resting place.
