Kilkenny Council Announces Urgent Plans for New Traffic Routes

BREAKING: Kilkenny County Council has just announced urgent plans to develop two new city routes aimed at alleviating significant traffic congestion caused by Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). This initiative responds directly to growing concerns from local communities, particularly in areas like the Circular Road near the Sceilp Inn, where HGV traffic has reached critical levels.
Senior Roads Engineer, Stan Cullen, revealed that the council aims to redirect HGV traffic onto a newly constructed road designed to better accommodate these large vehicles. This move is expected to significantly enhance safety and ease congestion in the affected areas.
In addition, plans for an alternative route from the western side of Kilkenny via St Francis’s Bridge are also underway. More detailed information regarding these projects is anticipated in the coming months as part of the Kilkenny City and Environs Heavy Commercial Vehicles Management Plan.
This announcement comes after years of frustration among residents due to heavy truck traffic. Last October, the council committed to new signage on Kennyswell Road, making it one-way for HGVs to mitigate the issue. The ongoing management plan, monitored and updated regularly, has shown effectiveness in previous developments, including the successful construction of St Francis Bridge in 2018, which helped reduce the traffic burden on nearby Green’s Bridge.
Local authorities have actively sought community input, welcoming public submissions under Section 38 of the Roads Act. Findings have identified key areas for HGV restrictions, notably on Dublin Road, Granges Road, and parts of the city center. Minor measures, including additional signage, are set to be implemented shortly.
The recent presentation of these plans received unanimous support from local representatives, including Cllr Sean Ó hArgain of Labour and Cllr Andrew McGuinness of Fianna Fáil, signaling strong political backing for these crucial changes.
Residents are urged to stay tuned for further updates as the council prioritizes addressing HGV-related issues. This development marks a decisive step forward in Kilkenny’s traffic management strategy, with potential benefits for all who live and travel in the area.
